- icon to run the program.
- 2. Pull down the Goodies menu and choose the MIDI Setup item.
- The MIDI Setup dialog appears.
-
- Ports
-
- Pro 4 can communicate with the MIDI world over one or two of
- your computer's output ports. This is good because it lets Pro 4
- address sixteen MIDI channels over each port, effectively giving it 32
- channel capability. You can use both if you have two MIDI interfaces
- or a dual port interface such as Music Quest's MQX-32M.
-
- There are four drop down list boxes that enable you to make port
- assignments. The two top list boxes let you designate the output
- port(s) of your interface as either Port A or Port B. This dialog
- determines which software port is connected to which of your
- computer's hardware ports. Pro 4's output can also be routed
- to sound cards like Creative Labs' Sound Blaster and Media Vision's
- Pro AudioSpectrum.
-
- Next to each of the output port list boxes is a check box labeled
- "Send Sync". Click this box to transmit MIDI sync messages on
- that port. Pro 4 sends MIDI song position pointer and MIDI
- clocks.
-
- The next list box, labeled "Record port" tells Pro 4 which port is
- connected to the MIDI controller with which you'll enter notes onto
- your score.
-
- Pro 4 can play or record based on your computer's own internal
- clock or on a MIDI song position pointer and MIDI clocks received
- from an outside source. If you'll be synchronizing your computer to
- an external signal, you may want to keep the incoming sync signal
- separate from MIDI data you're recording. The "Receive sync port"
- item lets you do this.
-
- Note: If you are using an MQX-32M and selected the MPU-401
- drivers during installation, Pro 4 will sense the presence of the
- MQX and offer a choice of MQX-32 Port 1 and Port 2 in the Port list
- boxes.
-
- Sync Source
-
- The "Sync Source" radio buttons determine whether you'll use your
- computer's clock or an external MIDI device as Pro 4's master
- clock.
-
- If you won't be using an external MIDI sync source to control the
- playback of Pro 4: Check Internal.
-
- Your PC's internal clock will control Pro 4's playback speed.
-
- If you do want to "slave" Pro 4's playback functions to an
- external source: Check External.
-
-
- You are now ready to use Pro 4. Please read the README2.TXT file
- to learn how to use the program.
-
- ********************************************************
- Pro 4 and Windows
-
- This version of Master Tracks Pro 4 is designed to run with the
- Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.0 or with the Windows 3.1
- MIDI drivers or with Passport's own MIDI drivers. If you have the
- Windows Multimedia Extensions or Windows 3.1 you should not
- install the Passport MIDI drivers, instead you can use any MIDI
- driver that is installed with Windows 3.1 or the Multimedia
- extensions. If you do NOT have Windows 3.1 or the Multimedia
- Extensions to Windows 3.0 you MUST install the Passport MIDI
- drivers in order for Master Tracks Pro to run.
-
- There are two cases where you might want to use Passport's MIDI
- drivers even if you are running Windows 3.0 with Multimedia
- Extensions or Windows 3.1. The first case if you want to use
- Passport's MIDI Transport interface. The second case is if you want
- to connect a Miracle Keyboard or a Yamaha TG-100 sound module
- directly to your computer's COM port. In any of these cases you can
- install the Passport MIDI drivers into the same directory where Pro
- 4 is installed. Then, to use the Passport MIDI drivers instead of the
- Multimedia Extensions or Windows 3.1 drivers, simply run Windows
- from inside the Pro 4 directory. Be aware that when you do this that
- the rest of the multimedia capabilities of Windows (i.e. Wave Audio,
- etc.) will not function. To restore full multimedia capabilities you
- must exit Windows and re-run Windows from any other directory
- that does not contain the Passport MIDI drivers.
-
- Note: If you have a MusicQuest MQX style MIDI interface, and you
- want to use its extended 32 MIDI channel or SMPTE syncing
- capabilities with Windows 3.1 or the Multimedia Extensions then you
- should get the driver that is available from MusicQuest.
-
- The Setup program creates a Program Manager group called "Pro4"
- and several Program Manager items (icons) for the Pro 4 executable
- program and sample files.
-
- Several sample music files are included with Pro 4. Some of the
- files are authored and voiced according to authoring guidelines for
- Multimedia PCs, where channels 1 through 10 are for Hi-End General
- MIDI style sound modules, while channels 13 through 16 are for
- base- level Adlib, SoundBlaster or MediaVision style FM synth cards.
- The best way to get these files to sound good on your system is to
- play them back through a correctly configured MIDI Mapper. You can
- do this by selecting the MIDI Mapper as the output port in Master
- Tracks Pro's MIDI Setup dialog. Alternativly, you can playback the
- base-level channels directly to an Adlib sytle FM synth, by selecting
- the corresponding output port in the MIDI Setup dialog and by
- soloing the tracks that are assigned to channels 13 through 16. MIDI
- Mapper support is only available when running with the Multimedia
- Extensions or Windows 3.1. Of course, if you have a General MIDI
- synth, such as the Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas connected to a MIDI
- out port, then you could solo all tracks that are assigned to channels
- 1 through 10 and play them back directly to the General MIDI synth.
-
- There are also several sample music files that are voiced for the
- Miracle Keyboard. If you choose either the "Miracle Keyboard" or the
- "Sample Music Files" option, Setup will install these files and create
- Program Manager icons for them.
-
- The other sample music files that are included are either voiced
- for a Roland MT-32, CM-64 or LAPC style synth or are generic
- enough to sound good on just about any synth or sound module.
- These files are not intended for multimedia purposes and will not
- sound right when played back through the MIDI Mapper.

- ************************************
- PRO 4 -
- Sound Card and MIDI Interface Address and Interrupt settings
-
- Pro 4 can work with Microsoft Windows with or without
- the Multimedia Extensions. We have provided MIDI drivers
- which can either replace or act in place of the Multimedia
- drivers.
-
- If you are using Passport's MIDI drivers you need to find
- out the port address and interrupt level your MIDI card
- uses. If those differ from the Passport MIDI driver defaults
- you need to use the MIDI Setup (MIDISET) program to get the
- correct values into your SYSTEM.INI file. Run MIDI Setup
- from the Pro 4 Program Group in Windows, select the
- appropriate driver from the list of Installed Devices, and
- click Setup to change the port address and interrupt level.
- If no devices appear to be installed, select the appropriate
- device(s) from the list box to the left and click Install.
-
- You can also edit the SYSTEM.INI file directly using Windows
- SYSEDIT application. Go to the [drivers] section of the
- SYSTEM.INI file and manually add or edit the drivers as in
- the examples below:
-
- ; default settings for an MPU-401
- [mpu401.drv]
- port=330
- int=2
-
- ; for Soundblaster MIDI
- [sndblst.drv]
- port=220
- int=3
-
- ; for port 1 on Passport's MIDI Transport
- [trnsprt1.drv]
- port=3f8
- int=4
-
- ; for port 2 on Passport's MIDI Transport
- [trnsprt2.drv]
- port=2f8
- int=3
-
- The first entry, for instance, will tell Passport's MIDI
- driver to look for your MPU-401 on interrupt 2 at port
- address 330. Check your card and its documentation for help
- on finding out what these values are. The above values are
- the defaults. You need only add an entry to your SYSTEM.INI
- file if your values are different than these.
-
- If you use a MusicQuest MIDI card, Passport's drivers allow
- you to access all of the cards 32 channels. Install the MPU-
- 401 driver for this card. Pro 4 will sense the presence
- of the MQX-32 and offer two port choices in the MIDI Setup
- dialog.
-
- Windows provides a program which makes editing your
- SYSTEM.INI file, and other system files, easy to do. It is
- called SYSEDIT.EXE and can be found in your Windows system
- directory. Add it to your Main group if you haven't done so
- already. It is great to have around. Take care when you edit
- these files, however. They must be just right for your
- system to work. Keep backups around just in case.
-
-
- **********************************
- PRO 4 -
- DLL FILES
-
- There are two files (LOMIDI.DLL and MMSYSTEM.DLL if you are
- using Passport's MIDI driver) which Windows must be able to
- find in order to run Pro 4. They can reside in the
- Windows directory, the Windows system directory, or any
- directory set in the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file.
-
- The default behavior of the Setup program is to add your new
- Pro 4 directory to the PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
- This means that Windows will find the DLLs by searching the
- PATH.
-
- If you wish, you can copy those three files into another
- directory in the PATH or in the Windows directories and
- remove your Pro 4 directory from the PATH statement. If
- you do this, make sure that the references to PRO 4.EXE
- (in any group file items or in the [Extensions] section of
- your WIN.INI file) use Pro 4's full path name since
- Windows won't be able to use the PATH statement to find
- PRO 4.EXE. This way you can avoid the expanding PATH
- statement syndrome.
-
- ***********************************
- TROUBLE SHOOTING
-
- -> If you get the message 'Out of environment space' when
- booting after installing Pro 4, increase the
- environment size in your CONFIG.SYS file. The statement:
-
- shell=command.com /e:512 /p
-
- will most likely provide you with ample space. If not,
- increase the number after '/e:'.
-
- -> If you get no MIDI I/O whatsoever, make sure that the
- SYSTEM.INI settings are correct. Check the card and its
- documentation to make sure of what the values are.
-
- -> We have noticed that with Windows Multimedia Extensions
- MPU-401 driver in 386 enhanced mode, occasional incoming
- data is lost. This has been reported and (we hope) will
- be addressed in future Multimedia Windows versions. In
- the meantime try running in Standard mode (run 'win /s'),
- which we have had better luck with.
